Ballroom Dance Classes

Get in Shape with Ballroom Dance Classes

Most people got caught up in the dance mania by watching "Dancing with the Stars" this last year. There's something very attractive about the music, the dancing, the quality of competition, and the often mean responses from the judges. But there is also something else, did you notice the professional dancers - their bodies? Not one of the professional dancers had an ounce of fat at all. What you saw was lean, toned, and muscular abs, arms, and legs. You would probably never think that ballroom dancing can create such a workout, but ballroom dance classes are actually one of the best programs for physical fitness available.

Ballroom dancing is much more than just a slow dance around a romantic dance floor. There are various types of dances that make up ballroom dancing, ones that involve twirls, kicks, twists, and bends. In fact, ballroom dancing provides you the opportunity to move your body in ways that you would not otherwise experience - not even in aerobics classes.

It's common that many people wanting to get fit or lose weight are intimidated by the gym. You are surrounded by people showing a better body than you, but often you wait for a machine or struggle to keep up in a class. Ballroom dance classes are a great way of making exercise fun, it's also an activity you can do with your partner or spouse. Sadly, some people continue living inactive lifestyles because they can't find a physical activity to their liking.

It may surprised you to learn that ballroom dancing can burn up just as much fat and calories (or more) than a workout at the gym. Depending upon the style of dance, you can quite easily burn between 200 and 400 calories. For instance, the foxtrot or the waltz provide an gentle and easy workout and will burn around 200 calories. This is comparable to a spritely walk in the park or thirty minutes on the elliptical. On the other hand, ballroom dance classes like the jive or paso doble can burn over 400 calories, which compares with an intense step aerobics class.

While walking on a treadmill or doing crunches are popular exercises, they only work certain parts of your body - and leave you to workout even longer in order to cover all the rest. Ballroom dancing really does work every part of your body and every major muscle group. You are more likely to get results more quickly due to the challenge your body encounters with dancing.

And if you do not have a dance partner to take with you dancing, don't let that stop you from experiencing the fun on the dance floor. Most ballroom dance classes will pair you with a partner once you arrive, and you may meet some great friends or something more :) Most people who get into ballroom dancing have lots of fun, and are more likely to dance longer which extends the length of their workout. So trade in your running shoes for some dancing shoes, and dance your way into better shape!
