Ballroom Dance Competitions

When you think of athletic competitions, you probably don't think of ballroom dance competitions. Most people tend to think of football games, tennis matches, or track & field meets. While these certainly qualify for an athletic competition, you probably already know exactly what to look forward to as a spectator. However, ballroom dance competitions shed a quite a different light on athleticism and are very entertaining to watch.

Until recently, ballroom dance was more associated with older generations or the sophisticated. Around the late 1980's, ballroom dancing began to popularise but once again but faded around 1995. It stayed on the back burner of America's athletic competitions until 1999, when it all of a sudden gained popularity and has remained there ever since. With the media taking an interest in ballroom dancing over recent years, more people are learning and joining ballroom dance competitions.

Some of the more popular ballroom dance competitions are hosted by Access Dance with competitions held all over the nation. Competitions are held during the year with prizes ranging from money to vacation package deals. The competition is divided into three major categories: youth, amateur, and professional. This allows all ages and ability levels to compete in ballroom dancing.

The Maryland Institute of Technology (MIT) also hosts a yearly ballroom dance competition. The competition is available to members of the MIT ballroom dance team and then anyone else who would also like to compete. The ballroom dance competitions are divided according to the style of dance you want to enter - for example, the mambo, paso doble, jive, etc. Each dance is classified into two categories, beginning and intermediate, with everybody invited to try out at the championship level. The cost for entering this particular competition ranges somewhere between $10 and $40 depending on your skill levels and the category you are entering.

Possibly the most infamous ballroom dance competitions are "Dancing with the Stars", aired twice yearly on ABC. This a very addictive dance competition featuring celebrities from various backgrounds - from the entertainment industry to athletes. One champion of ballroom dancing, Apollo Anton Ono, is an Olympic gold-medal speed skater who had no previous knowledge of ballroom dancing pre the competition. The previous season of "Dancing with the Stars" also provided a winner from the athlete world, Emmitt Smith, an ex-NFL player for the Dallas Cowboys. The competition teams up celebrities with no ballroom dance experience with professional partners who teach ballroom dance. It begins with 10 couples and weekly, viewers eliminate one couple by voting for their favorite pair. It was particularly after the first season of "Dancing with the Stars" that many people took an interest in ballroom dancing and the mania soon spread all over the globe. Now, over 20 countries host their own televised ballroom dance competition.

If you want to compete in ballroom dancing, a simple search of the internet will furnish you with information as regards a competition near you. Even if you are just a beginner, there are ballroom dance competitions for every skill level and ability.
