Ballroom Dance Instruction

Ballroom dancing is judged on over a dozen different factors. Ballroom dance instruction - some of those are; Poise, Posture, Line, Hold, Togetherness, Timing, Presentation and Power just to name some. With the numbers of dancers being evaluated, judges rely greatly on the impression each couple makes in relation to the others. With time and experience the judges learn to do so quickly.

Posture: No matter how technically correct you are, your ballroom dancing will not ever be graceful, elegant, or give an air of confidence without the proper posture. Proper poster also enhances balance, gives you more control and makes for a fluid dance. The old saying is "Persistent practice of postural principles promises perfection" gives you an idea of the importance of good posture in any ballroom dance instruction.

Timing: Just as bad posture can ruin your attempt, if your timing and the timing of the music do not match - you lose. It will not matter how well you do everything else.

Line: The 'line' makes reference to the line of your body from head to toe. The 'line' can make or break any ballroom dance instruction. Whether curved or straight, correct lines will make you look elegant and graceful.

Hold: Dancing with arms, hands etc., an incorrect position or breaking your hold at the wrong time will also cost you points. In addition, having your body parts in the correct place you also need to keep your holds symetrical to your dance partner. In some particular ballroom dance instructions one of the worst things you can do is to break your hold.

Poise: In polished dancing, the stretch of the woman's body upwards, outwards and slightly to the left into the man's right arm will maintain balance and connection with his frame, as well as to project outward to the audience. Poise like posture and line has everything to do with an image you project as you move around the ballroom.

Togetherness: When your bodies correctly fit together, you will be able to dance in complete synchronization with your partner and appear to lead and follow with no effort at all.

Presentation: The judges will be looking out not only for how you look to them but how well you sell yourselves to the audience. Are you confident, enthusiastic, happy? It must show. Even in dances like the Paso Doble and the Tango where the expressions are more somber you still have to appear confident and assured.

Power: Energy is a magnificent thing and one of the most important aspects in dancing, like the Quick Step or the Jive however, if it is over-done it will become just boisterous movements.

Judges, like dancers each have their own style and different ideas of the importance of the criteria. One judge may put a much greater value on technique while another thinks expression and musicality are more important. This can cause a difference between the scores of one couple coming from two judges. Keep it in mind that judges see you for only a brief few minutes so whatever happens to catch their eye is going to weigh heavily on their decision and your final scores and ballroom dance instruction.
