Ballroom Dance Studios

Ballroom Dance Studios and United States Amateur Ballroom dancers Association, Inc.

During 1965 Norman Martin, a top social and competitive dance champion assembled a group of dancers that became known as USABDA, or the United States Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association, Inc. Their goal was to petition the International Olympic committee to incorporate ballroom dancing in the Olympic schedule. Unfortunately they were not able to achieve that aim at that time. Nevertheless, while working on this bid to enter the Olympics, the committee was establishing their bylaws and came to the realisation that there was a real need for guidelines for the great number of American Style dancers and Social Dancers, and also the International Style competitors.

While working in assisting the dancers compete on a national and international level, they moreover helped to set things in motion to guarantee the availability of music, floors and venues for a group - ballroom dance studios, that came to be the foundation of the USABDA, the social dancers.

The initial years for the USABDA saw only a small amount of members in state of New York, a handful in the Washington, DC area and a handful on the west coast. In 1978 USABDA began its mid-eastern chapter and the drive was on to take their little troop to a national level. In the next one or two years saw chapters forming in several other states.

All through the 80's the USABDA recruitment endeavours consisted of doing their best to get all amateur dance organizations to attach to them as a national organization with a district chapter structure. In 1985 with their new bylaws established the USABDA was assigned a tax-exempt status by the IRS. With the unifying process underway the USABDA was officially accepted by what is now recognized as the International DanceSport Federation (IDSF). The USABDA now presides over all forms of amateur ballroom dancing throughout the United States.

Over the last 12 years USABDA has advanced the growth of all forms of ballroom dance as well as coming up with an agenda to establish chapters in every state with ballroom dance studios. They have enjoyed substantial growth in numbers of competitions, chapters, dancers, workshops and social dances every year. Every year the USABDA sends United States representatives to the World Games. The World Games supply a place for Olympic recognized sports have yet to be added to the Olympic program.

The USABDA's pursuit to get their coverted place in the Olympics is still forging ahead. To date the ISDF has been given complete recognition by the International Olympic Committee as the international governing body for DanceSport and the USABDA has been given affiliate membership acknowledging them as the domestic governing Body of DanceSport in the Untied States.
The final remaining step is for DanceSport to be given Program Status by the IOC which would mean that they would then be added to the Olympic program. With continuing hard work and a bit of luck this will be achieved in the near future.
The USABDA has built up into an organization with thousands of members who give of their time to help promote competitive and social dancing on college campuses and in the community across the country with ballroom dance studios.
