Ballroom Dancing - Dancers, & Judges

Ballroom dancing has been around for many decades producing dancers by the thousands, and judges as well. These are all creative people dedicated to their art. Some are big names in the dance scene that everybody knows, but the average person would not recognize.

Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire are probably two of the most recognized names when it comes to dancings. Fred Astaire was born in 1899, a native of Omaha, Nebraska. He began studying dance at the age of four years old and by the time he was seven he and sister Adele had developed their very own vaudeville act. By the time he was in his mid-twenties he had already gathered international stardom for his roles on Broadway. In 1933 he got his first film break, a small dancing part in Dancing Lady and later on in that year he and Ginger Rogers first appeared in a film together, 'Flying Down to Rio' the musical comedy. Ginger Rogers from Independence, Missouri, was born in 1911 . Her mother's grand ambitions for her took her down identical roads as Fred Astaire - vaudeville, Broadway, and then Hollywood. Fred Astaire danced with many different ladies over his long productive career but none of them had the chemistry displayed with Ginger Rogers.

Vernon and Irene Castle were amongst the first dancers to make a career out of social dancing. At the time the world was seeking something new and more exciting, less stiff and starchy. The Castles, both athletes had a stylish, even exotic air about them. They were a breath of fresh air for the creative world of dance for the short period before the Second World War brought things to a halt.

Shorena Gachechiladze and Gocha Chertkoev are powerful competitors who have become very sought after as performers. Beginning in the Soviet Republic they have trained in ballet, disco, jazz and ballroom. They have starred in the "Championship Ballroom Dancing" for five years running and they hold a variety of titles between them.

Cheryl Burke is the 2005 World Cup Professional Rising Star Latin Champion. She is a professional and the only person to have won two straight seasons on the hugely popular television show, Dancing With the Stars. Cheryl grew up in San Francisco and began dancing at the age of four years old. At the age of 10 Cheryl came to realize that ballroom was not "just for old people" and began training in both the Latin and Standard dances.

Jonathon Roberts, another professional from Dancing With the Stars, has six championships to his name. He had a good background in basketball and various other sports but after observing Al Pacino dance his famous Tango in Scent of a Woman, basketball was religated to the backseat as he took up ballroom dancing.

Bruno Tonioli, Carrie Ann Inaba and Len Goodman were the three judges on Dancing With the Stars. Carrie Ann was a pro dancer, choreographer and director; Bruno, also a dancer and top-level choreographer and Len, specialized in Exhibition Dancing won the British Exhibition four times over. He is also an experienced judge of professional Latin dance competitions.
