Ballroom Dancing Music

Ballroom Dancing Music

When you consider ballroom dancing, you may well think of sedate music played by a violin. Some centuries ago, your assessment would have been quite correct. Ballroom dancing music was initially performed to violins, guitars and cellos. This style of music was proper at that time, as for the most, ballroom dances were sedate and very exact. But, as time progressed and ballroom dancing acquired popularity, the music adapted along with the dances.

The days are gone of the soft acoustic strings; now, a diversity of music is involved in ballroom dancing. The music relies strictly on the type of dance being performed. There are over ten customary dances in ballroom dancing, with a bunch more variations, so you can see that the music will change for each dance. Here is a look at some examples of music and songs appropriate for each dance style.

Spanish dance, the paso doble illustrates the bullfighter's agility and bravery. Many times, the woman symbolizes the matador's cape. The paso doble is a dramatic and really intense dance, so the music chosen should fit that kind of a scene. Much of the time, the music for this dance is more so instrumental, but rapid-paced with a dramatic flair. The Spanish culture must be remembered, so choose music with maracas, horns and acoustic guitars.

The jive is a light-hearted and upbeat dance that give the dancers expression of their careless character. The moves are fast with plenty of quick kicks and twirling of the woman. Much of the jive is carried out in a stationery position and does move around the dance floor. "Hound Dog" by Elvis Presley is a very good example of the jive, as is the unmistakable song, "Born to Hand Jive". All of the Ballroom dancing music that copies this type of tempo is suitable for the jive.

The quickstep is a fusion of the jive and the swing. The steps are awfully quick and actions must be quick and exact. This dance is generally best done to instrumental music. A few of the songs more common for the quickstep are "Flash", "Big Band" and "Spoonful of Sugar". All of these songs have a bright and upbeat tempo and also have the 1940's dance club feel.

The foxtrot is certaintly of the well liked ballroom dances, even though it is also a very difficult dance to learn. The foxtrot is a smooth dance with fluid moves, and the moves are "slow, quick, quick, slow". This dance is deemed to be crème de la and certaintly of the most formal, so selecting music can be rather a challenge. Bear in mind that foxtrot Ballroom dancing music should not be up-beat, but must follow along with the steps. Shakira's "Underneath Your Clothes" and Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" are excellent choices for the foxtrot.

The cha cha is a very high-spirited type of dance. It is rapid-paced and incorporates a lot of hip action with quick footsteps. This dance is easier than some of the other styles dance when it comes to choosing Ballroom dancing music. Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" and Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever" are perfect songs for dancing the cha cha.
